“The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant is a story with a drastic character change that causes the reader to perceive her, Mme. Loisel, differently over the course of the story. In the beginning, Mme. Loisel seems like a selfish and needy woman, “‘It annoys me not to have a single jewel, not a single stone, nothing to put on. I shall look like distress.’(Maupassant 525)” Mme. Loisel is unable to accept the fact that she is not extremely wealthy. She feels that she must be of a higher class and have a nicer house; however, she does not do anything about it. Eventually, she decides to borrow some jewels from a friend for a ball. On that night, she looses them. She becomes exceedingly distraught and her understanding husband, who will do anything for her, does all he can to find a replacement. They have to give up every valuable item that they have and borrow an enormous amount of money in order to have enough to pay the jeweler for the new necklace. Additionally, they have to work for ten years to be able to repay their debts and Mme. Loisel learns what it feels like to be poor and not have anything nice. As a result, she will probably never complain about how bad her life was ever again as she used to.

Sitting on the glass cake stand,
So shiny I can see my reflection in its cover.
It looks so proud, so grand.
Why am I such a cake lover?
It tempts me ever so slightly
With its perfect roundness, it looks so yummy.
The frosting is covering it ever so lightly.
I can feel the rumbling in my tummy.
The texture is so smooth and round,
There’s no lump, bump, not even a mound.
The frosting is thick, but so perfectly slathered,
Hopefully this one sliver won’t even matter.
Why’d my mother have to buy one baked to perfection?
She found it in the market, in my favorite section.
She bought it on sale,
With the coupon she got in the mail.
My sterling silver fork shines in the light.
I’ve really been longing to take a bite.
I plunge my fork into the first layer,
Mmmmmmm its so good, I’ve got to say a prayer.
I run to grab a knife as fast as I can,
I need to save this precious moment in my life
I cut a decent sized piece with the clean knife.
All that thinking in a really short time span.

“She studied every sentence: and her feelings towards the writer were at times widely different. (Austen, page 206)”
Why does Elizabeth study the letter so much? What opinions has she changed about Darcy?
Elizabeth Bennet constantly reads Darcy’s letter because she feels guilty that she has prejudged him. From the instant that she met Fitzwilliam Darcy, Elizabeth has conjured ideas about him being conceited and proud. Elizabeth is astonished when he asks for her hand and argue with him about situations that she did not know enough about herself. Once Elizabeth reads the letter, she feels terrible about prejudging him as a rude person when truthfully he is not. The first time that she reads the letter, Elizabeth previous notions were tested with the letter and she could not believe it. Therefore, she had to read it several times to truly adapt to a new perspective of Mr. Darcy. The opinions that Elizabeth changes regarding Mr. Darcy are that she now believes him to be sincere and kind. She does not think he is as proud or rude as she first decided. As a result, she feels badly that she left him with such harsh words after he left her with a letter that explained everything. Moreover, Elizabeth is extremely sorry and eager to make amends with him.

Ideal Guy
Physically fit with a charming personality, who demonstrates that he cares about me deeply, and makes my heart skip a beat when he walks into the room…that’s my ideal man. Physically, he has to be tall with a toned body and good looking. Intellectually, he must be smart, however not cocky about it. For example, if we are with a group of friends and we are discussing the latest scientific invention, which he knows everything about, he must be polite and wait for others to speak before him and then proceed when the time is appropriate. Emotionally, he has to be a softie, or someone who cries at the right moments. In addition to all of these qualities, there are several characteristics that I would like to find in someone. He is required to be understanding about the fact that I want to have another social life and a strong relationship. Moreover, he needs to be there for me at crucial moments. Someone who will tell me that he loves me (and means it) on a regular basis just to make sure that I know he isn’t wavering. Someone who will surprise me in the best of ways: a flower in my locker or a note in my purse. Someone who will always look out for me and will make sure I am okay, even if we are in a big group. Someone who compliments me daily, even if I think what he is saying is crap. A gentle, kind, down-to-earth guy…that’s who I’m attracted too.
